Last Gasp

Synopsis

After a night out, teenage girl Julianna Harper is watched arriving at her wealthy house. The girl and her father Robert are making breakfast when two men dressed as gas engineers scam their way into the house saying there is a gas leak.

But a slip gives the men away. With his cover blown one of the men reveals himself to be Raad Karim.

He claims Harper’s oil company is wrecking his hometown of Rumaila in Iraq. Panicking, Harper feigns an asthma attack.

As Juliana and Karim search for an asthma inhaler she discreetly calls 999. The police hear the words ‘lives in danger.’

Karim reveals that his daughter has leukaemia caused, he believes, by burning flares from oil wells next to their home in Rumaila.

Julianna is shocked to hear her father blocked plans to stop the flares. Karim demands that Harper change his position and vote to halting flaring at the AGM which is about to start.

Horrified, Juliana turns on her father.

Robert Harper is conflicted. Stopping the flaring will affect profits and his reputation but not acting will lose him his daughter. As they row it comes out that Harper’s wife died of cancer.

Raad pleads with him and eventually Harper caves in. He offers his hand to take the phone. At that moment, armed police arrive shouting, ‘Hands up.’

In the panic, Karim reaches for the phone to make Harper vote. Seeing a sudden movement, police open fire killing Raad and Julianna is hit. Injured she persuades her father to do the right thing and vote to stop the flaring.

Harper phones the AGM. But, to his shock, it is too late the vote has passed and Harper is left to contemplate his failure to his daughter and Rumaila.
