This film is part of a series of experimental films I am making in the Sicilian language. “Strisci ca fannu ombre di culuri” is a Sicilian phrase meaning “strips that make colored shadows” (referring to celluloid film). The colors onscreen echo the traditional color palette in Sicilian art from my home town in Sicily. The layered voices on the soundtrack are murmuring phrases from traditional Sicilian folk songs and religious songs in the Sicilian dialect. When a language begins to disappear, what is lost is more than the words. The culture, history, and identity of its speakers is also lost.
