Nermine, Ameni, and Ela live in Ezzahra, a suburb in the province of Tunis. They are cousins of Meriem, a second-generation Italian girl born and raised in Savona. Tunisia is a land all four of them love deeply: it is the place of their roots, but also the only space where they can meet. Due to strict visa policies put in place to mitigate so-called "migration risks," it is nearly impossible for most Tunisians to travel to Europe. As a result, the three cousins have never been able to leave their country.

The documentary explores the physical, but above all, the spiritual, distance between Meriem and her cousins. A distance that grows deeper, until it becomes an abyss, when a political decision crashes into their lives and tears them apart.
