2025 has been declared the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation (IYGP) by the United Nations General Assembly.
This global initiative, co-facilitated by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), aims to:
Raise awareness about the critical role glaciers play in the climate system and water cycle.
Highlight the urgent challenges posed by accelerated glacier melt due to climate change.
Mobilize governments, scientific institutions, the private sector, and civil society to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement adaptation strategies.
Additionally, starting in 2025, March 21st has been designated as the annual World Day for Glaciers.
