24 February 1857. In the aftermath of the Heshun Confederation’s assault and occupation of Kuching, vengeance returns to Sarawak with fire in its wake. Charles Brooke and his Bidayuh allies advance upon Bau, the prosperous gold-mining town at the heart of the uprising, determined to answer blood with blood and reclaim control of the frontier.

Amid the noise of celebration and the gathering storm of war, Ling moves alone into the heart of the Heshun Confederation. A highly skilled Bidayuh operative in the service of the British East India Company, she enters Bau not as a soldier, but as a shadow, carrying with her the memory of Sungei Lung, where her family and village were destroyed.
