Loosely Based on the tragedy of Doctor Faustus.
In Past the Cyrcle, the Faustian myth is reinterpreted through the tragic ordeal of Jorio F., a young post-punk musician torn between the sting of remorse and the burning hatred.
Fragmented by his past and drained by an all-consuming desire to create, Jorio encounters a strange, nameless figure – an ambiguous and inscrutable being – with whom he seems to strike a pact destined to transform his art and his life forever. Through a dark, arcane and feverish understanding of music, Jorio achieves a new and unsettling creativity, yet what appears to be a revelation soon becomes a form of possession.
While its narrative draws primarily from the Faustian literary tradition—especially Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus—its staging embraces an earlier theatrical lineage. The visual language, the stylised performances, and the overall mise-en-scène are deeply indebted to Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, to the broader context of the Elizabethan theatre, and to the Commedia Dell’Arte tradition. Rather than pursuing psychological realism, the film adopts a deliberately theatrical approach, where gesture, rhythm, archetypal figures and symbolic space become expressive tools in themselves.
Inspired by the Faustian tradition and, in particular, by Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus, Past the Cyrcle tells the story of the relationship between genius, guilt and self-destruction, immersing the audience in a universe suspended between reality, distorted memories and intrusive thoughts. Music becomes an epistemological device, employed to force the laws of the universe and of dimensions.
