Synopsis
Inspired by true events, "A Latina in DC" is a 29-minute dark romantic comedy about Eva, a successful middle-aged Latina professional navigating independence, identity, aging, and the brutal absurdities of modern dating in Washington, DC.
Seven years after leaving Miami in search of a fresh start, Eva appears to have built the life she always wanted: a respected career, a beautiful apartment, and the independence she fought for. Beneath that polished exterior, however, she is increasingly exhausted by a dating culture shaped by racism, misogyny, cultural stereotypes, the fetishization of Latina women, and the pressure to remain desirable, composed, and endlessly resilient as she grows older.
Encouraged by friends and confronted with society's expectations of what a woman her age should want, Eva endures a series of increasingly absurd blind dates and romantic encounters. What begins as frustration with modern dating gradually forces her to confront deeper questions about loneliness, self-worth, belonging, and the emotional cost of constantly adjusting herself to make others comfortable.
As her encounters become more chaotic and darkly comedic, Eva begins questioning the life she has worked so hard to build. An unexpected connection challenges her assumptions about intimacy and genuine love, while the possibility of leaving Washington, DC, behind opens the door to an entirely different future.
Music is an integral part of the film's storytelling and emotional atmosphere. Featuring a fully licensed soundtrack by the iconic British synth-pop band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), the film uses music to evoke nostalgia, romantic longing, vulnerability, and the contradictions of starting over. Deeply connected to the filmmaker's own personal history, OMD's songs become an emotional thread throughout Eva's journey, complementing the film's humor while giving its quieter, more intimate moments additional depth.
Blending satire, sharp humor, memorable music, and emotional vulnerability, "A Latina in DC" explores the experiences of women who refuse to become invisible with age. Ultimately, Eva's journey leads toward an unexpected new chapter in Málaga, Spain, where starting over means more than changing countries. It means reclaiming her identity, embracing uncertainty, and choosing herself instead of the version of herself others expect.
