On December 31, 2019, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission (China) reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown etiology in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. Most of the cases had an epidemiological link to the Huanan Seafood Market in southern China, a wholesale seafood and live animal market. JANUARY 10, 2020: NEW VIRUS IDENTIFIED. A few days after the cluster of cases in Wuhan was announced, Chinese researchers deposited the virus's "identity card," i.e., the viral RNA sequence, in the international database virological.org. Unlike all previously known viruses, knowing the sequence is the first step in the fight against the coronavirus. JANUARY 20, 2020: THE VIRUS IS SPREAD FROM PERSON TO PERSON. In an unfortunately historic press conference by China's National Health Commission, what had been suspected for days was confirmed: the new coronavirus is spread from human to human. This confirms the emergence of a new viral disease that will be identified as COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease).
