It is Sunday, 1st November 1620. Near Rakovník for six days the Imperial-Ligist army have been provoking the Estates commanders to take more offensive action and to leave their advantageous positions west of the city. The infantry, part of Spinelli's Neapolitan Tercio, supported by Ligist Germans and Lorraine soldiers, is forming on the right wing of the Imperial-Ligist line.
In front of them is the church of St. Giles occupied by Estates‘ soldiers, who from this advanced position complicate the water supply of horses and for the Ligists.
There are about thirty Estates‘ soldiers in the church grounds and in the adjacent cemetery on the southern slope of Bendovka hill, and dozens more are stationed in its vicinity.
Is this day coming to a decisive encounter?
