The protagonist is a doctor whose existence is utterly devasted when his daughter suddenly dies because of an accident. The memory of that tragic day is interrupted by an emergency call during his day off. A woman is at home and is giving birth to her child: unfortunately, her gynaecologist cannot reach her house and the only available doctor is the protagonist. A highway bridge collapsed in the city, paralysing everything. Alfredo, our protagonist, will try to save the woman and her baby, just like he tried to save his daughter (as we realize through the use of very quick flashbacks). When he rushes to the woman’s aid, the doctor has a moment of hesitation: while the woman desperately begs him with her eyes to save her baby, they recognize each other: she is the woman who ran over the doctor’s daughter and he realizes that she has never recovered from that terrible event, just like him. The man's hesitation is the consequence of the fact that he would have the power to do nothing and avenge his daughter’s death, but he decides to forgive the woman by saving her and her baby. The woman, extremely grieved but grateful, will name her baby after Alfredo’s daughter, Roberta. The man has voluntarily decided to forgive her, and it is thanks to his wise decision that he will be able to keep on living despite his unbearable pain.
