The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR) is a scenic route across Washington State from Oregon to Canada through the Cascade Mountain Range. The 600-mile route follows a connection of mostly unpaved back roads that can be ridden on dual-sport and adventure motorcycles or driven in 4×4 and high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The route is usually snow-free July through September. When Bryce Stevens and Andrew Cull won the 2010 Overland Flag Competition for their proposal to create an off-road route across the state of Washington, they decided to make their vision a reality. In the spring of 2010, the two adventure motorcyclists from the Northwest began scouting and mapping a new off-road route across Washington State from Oregon to Canada for dual-sport adventure motorcycles and 4×4 vehicles.

Bjarni (50) and his mother Sigrún (78), Mundi (93) and young farmer Skjöldur (35) are represented in this lyrical insight into a community that stuggles with market middlemen that press down produce prices, leaving increasingly less profit for the farmers themselves and threatening the fundamentals of their existence. Despite these adversities the community refuses to throw in the towel.

A 10-year-old boy in a pink salwar kameez stands near a dune-coloured wall under a powder-blue sky. He frowns and gesticulates, conversing in stops and starts with the heavens or at least with the gusting wind because you don’t see his kite at first, and the string is so fine you can’t see that either. What you see is a body interacting with unknown forces, pulling to the left, the right, up, down, quick, over to the left again, and so on. Here is not only the body of the boy but the body of the world in deft mutual mimesis, amounting to ‘the mastery of non-mastery’ which is the greatest game of all: a guide, a goal, a strategy –all in one– for dealing with man’s domination of nature (including human nature). Afghan kite fighters often attach small blades to their kite strings, or coat them with ground glass and glue, the better to down their opponents’. Under the Taliban, kite-flying was banned.
