S.O.S. Sky on Skin

Video performance through 4 seasons, 2005. The artist infiltrates nature four times. Nature flews through her veins and nestles under her skin. The color on her skin evolves with the 4 seasons we have in Belgium: winter, spring, summer, autumn. The blue hue that predominates in the sky at that particular moment in the circle of the year is condensed on the artist's skin. Marie Julia Bollansée uses 4 blue pigments: cobalt in winter, ceruleum in spring, indigo in summer and ultramarine in autumn. The Impressionists studied the same setting in different lights or different seasons. They looked at it with their eyes and painted it. Marie Julia Bollansee goes into nature, into the same small biotope several times of the year-circle. And she becomes nature for a while.

Since then, apparently lots of things have changed in their lives. With Rajeev´s “arranged wedding” as a story line the film reflects the great cultural difference the two friends live under today. Without a doubt, the Icelandic girl Birta sticks out among Hindus and elephants in this colorful wedding in south India. A sincere film about friendship that crosses the cultural difference between two continents.

Children’s Game #5: Revolver

The props in this game are wooden sticks or branches shaped like guns. Two kids pretend to fire at each other, making elaborate and highly varied shooting noises. A further dramatic element is the creative use of whatever lends itself in the vicinity –dustbins, trees, walls, abandoned cars– to improvise scenes inspired by war films and westerns, car chases and shootouts between gangs. The camerawork is rapid, swirling, full of jump cuts. A little girl sometimes raises her arms, in exasperation or surrender? Near the end, some half-hearted dying noises. Though the roles of victim and killer are pre-assigned, neither boy actually bites the dust.
