Woman Dancing on the Roof

It is the story of a woman once known from the media. She finds it easier to get undressed in front of others than to tell about the painful memories filled with solitude. However, in this documentary she is particularly open and fearless of showing her vulnerability. “In my film I tried to reveal this woman’s balancing act on the edge of a high roof, in confrontation with her own body and comprehending the surrounding world quite differently,” – revealed director J. Lapinskaitė.

She must remember that the hands of her lover are not the hands of her childhood abuser, and so, the separation between past and present begins to blur. Narrative and experimental, "Blue Covers" is an emotional, psychological and spiritual journey. A compelling look at the effects of sexual trauma, this short film is for survivors of abuse and those who care for them.

Getijden

'Getijden' consists of 8 parts, a carousel of images and sounds revolving in a mysterious parallel world, and filled with different emotions and states-of-mind; longing, passion, liberation, drive, dedication, realisation, transformation and reflection. The making of this film was like weaving a Persian carpet. Spread out over a period of two years I lived with this project, the filming was done in different seasons on carefully chosen locations and days. The complete crew and cast consisted of two people, a performance in itself. The eight different parts are shot on a variety of film emulsions, each with a specific characteristic. The raw material is digitally mastered and manipulated. The film has a peculiar structure, no beginning-middle-end but, eight parts that form a cycle. A short film, an endless film. (Karel Doing)

This video was made to talk about abuse in psychiatry, which I experienced in Montreal. However I chose to let others words explain my feelings on the topic. The visuals are recontextualized shots from The Miracle Worker, starring Patty Duke as Helen Keller. Patty Duke went on to develop bipolar disorder, like me. The main sound used in this video is from the radio emissions captured by the Cassini space probe from Saturn.

Children’s Game #4: Elastic

Close-up on shiny boots, knotted elastic, cobbles. Within the confines of a courtyard two demure little girls are playing a game of confinement, entrapment, escape. An elastic band has been stretched into a rectangle around four points –the legs of one girl and of a chair. At first the rectangle is positioned close to the ground. Silent with concentration, the girls take turns bracing the elastic and performing a prescribed sequence of jumps on and around the tensed bands. Ankles are entangled and then jump free. As the elastic rises higher, more and more of the body is involved in skilful contortions and athletic, perilous choreography. There’s no ultimate winning, just getting better at the dance.
