The Passages of Walter Benjamin

Walter Benjamin was a leading German Jewish cultural historian. His Arcades Project, a monumental study of nineteenth century Paris, is set in the context of his life and times. His friendships with Brecht, Scholem, Arendt and Adorno and his romances are evoked. Drawing on correspondence and quotations from 'The Arcades Project,' the film is a visual evocation of Benjamin's great incomplete study. The film includes photographs, documents, letters and manuscripts from the Benjamin archives in Berlin and Jerusalem, prints and photographs from the Bibliotheque national in Paris, interviews with leading Benjamin scholars and archival film of Paris and Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s.

My Last Words

My Last Words is an experimental 35mm black and white film that takes a look at the process of writing a Last Will and Testament. The film experiments with this legal document and personalizes the process. With this film I physically wrote out the words of my Will onto unexposed 35mm black and white film stock using a small pen light. I worked in complete darkness so that the only areas exposed to light are the areas physically touched by the light source.

Ocean of Melody

The film explores the fluidity that these forms of music allow within a well-defined structure – one that is derived intrinsically from constant improvisations by the performer. Introducing the practical aspects of music like the svara and raga, the narrative goes on to elaborate on the various styles of presentation and examines the relationship shared by the master and the disciple. It attempts to understand the essence behind the elevation to a spiritual realm that exponents often find themselves in after years of practice and penance – a tenet that keeps the form pure and timeless is also explored.

Beware of the Homosexuals

A parody of the 1950s "scare films" that warned young boys who don't recognize the "warning signs" of "the homosexuals". These warning signs "prove" that homosexuals spend all their time sizing up, targeting and eventually "having their way with" them and then "turn" them into homosexuals, too. Several examples of "suspicious" behavior that would indicate a man may be a homosexual are offered.

Conservatively raised and entering adulthood, a privileged young dancer struggles to understand their gender identity and becomes threatened by a bigoted community. After escaping to a safe-space, the dancer is approached by the manifestation of their subconscious identity who offers comfort and protection when it can't be found anywhere else.
