Roller Derby in the Low Countries

In this short documentary, we take a look at the history and future of roller derby in the Netherlands, while also touching on subjects such as image and the rise of men’s teams in this traditionally female sport. We tried to capture the Roller Derby culture with grungy 16mm film overlays and an eclectic mix of colors, switching from black and white, back to color. This, combined with the use of stock footage, the Whip It trailer and choice of music really help to sell the vibe and sensibilities of roller derby.

The Pygmy Hippo: A Very Secret Life

The pygmy hippo is one of nature's last great mysteries. Solitary, secretive and extremely hard to find, scientists know almost nothing about this endangered animal in the wild and what it needs to survive. Now, a young Australian ecologist, Wei-Yeen Yap, is taking on what could be 'mission impossible'. In a remote West African rainforest, Wei investigates the secret life of the pygmy hippo, attempting to unravel its mysteries in the hope that with greater knowledge we will be able to save it.

In a mythic parallel reality, a young man yearns for affinity and connection. In this age of digital avatars, he crafts a version of himself that is far more corporeal - by stitching together parts of himself to become his own cyborg twin. He calls this miraculous being into existence with a techno-magick concoction of symbology and code, and for a while they enjoy a strange and touching get-to-know-you-better of the self. But the cyborg has been corrupted by a cyberfeminist virus. This Other self embodies a dangerous idea: that there are parts of ourselves beyond our control. This lo-fi sci-fi features two transgender men, performing a very queer version of their own lives. It is an experimental hybrid of documentary, fiction and performance art.

Model Village

Kijong-dong, a propaganda village from the 1950s, is situated in one of the world's most inaccessible spots: the Korean demilitarised zone. From South Korea it can only just be seen and looks like a film set. The brightly painted concrete flats are empty shells, the flagpole is one of the tallest in the world and the loudspeakers blast nationalist slogans and songs. Model Village envisages a visit to this forbidden zone.

‘Blesi’ is a short about liminal racial/national identity in which my Tamil mother speaks on her experience of having children who don’t resemble or identify with her. It is a self-portrait that features my sister Yagazie as a proxy subject. The sari she wears in the film is our mother’s kurai, one of her wedding saris, and the music is an evening raga our uncle played every evening at his house in Bangsar, Malaysia.

Fordlandia

Fordlandia is a small settlement on the River Tapajos in the Brazilian part of the Amazon, where Henry Ford set up a rubber industry in the 1920s. Mainly due to the resistance of nature, the project failed and was abandoned some 20 years later. Fordlandia is a voyage of (de)colonisation whereby the drifts and detours of modernity in uncertain places are highlighted, turning away from whatever their historical imaginaries were. The tensions between industrial and natural landscape are levelled off in a certain horizontality of hierarchies between form and content, and at the same time the animal resignifies possibilities of the community of the living.
