Margaret Tait died April 16th 1999, aged 80. She was an intensely private person with a unique vision, firmly rooted in her native Orkney. Glasgow Women’s Library, working with filmmakers Marissa Keating and Michael Jones, went on a journey to document the story of this elusive filmmaker and poet through her friends, family, and peers.

Surface II

Surface II is an experimental moving image work focused upon several concepts. In one sense it is a visual experimental journey that discovers and plays with the notions of the celluloid surface, the ways specifically it can be physically manipulated. In another sense it is a study of image and sound, every visual detail is paired with its own unique sound sample which creates an almost hypomanic sensation where even the smallest detail takes on a new sense. The work also questions decay in a literal sense but also beyond the surface, the degradation of a medium and a time.

“For my work for films4peace, I considered certain visual metaphors. Compared with the eternity of the universe, human life is short, very short. Our existence is like a grain of sand in a desert or a speck of stone on the rock that makes the world. Conflict and destruction seems absurd if you consider the insignificance of our time on earth. Let us distance ourselves from oppression and slaughter. The creation of world peace is more important for all humankind. In my film, huge boulders slowly rise up amidst a chaotic noise that drifts in and out. Human life is not always beautiful, more often than not, we are simply trying to survive, allowing our lives to continue and nothing more.” —Yang Fudong

Jie finds a way to get the keys to the foreman's car, but is targeted by another cellmate. The two set out on the road to rendezvous with Tang, only to discover that there is more to the matter than simply stealing an ambulance.

Stan Brakhage's Liberation

By finding that form again, and retrieving its original properties, I am to liberate Stan Brakhage, the symbol of Direct Film that is so smeared upon history. "I interview my great-uncle Jose Elias Awad about his Berlin years (late 50's to late 60's), when he was finishing his doctorate in Economics at the Humboldt University in East Berlin. General Secretary of the Colombian Communist Party at the time, Jose Elias married Esther Bloss and on the day of their wedding in the Sudeten he left to help build the Berlin Wall. He told off Che for not having read Marx, hung out with Tamara Bunke and advised against the rise up in arms of the newly founded guerrilla group ELN (National Liberation Army) in Colombia. In 1968 he returned to Colombia after being expelled from the Party, and grew apart from his children, because of geographical distance and political ideology." - Juana Awad
