The Art of Yodeling

We follow the philosophy student and yodeler Polkabjørn on his way to the ultimate yodel experiences, and to success. He and his musical companion "Kleine Heine" take their yodel act from the narrow fjords of Norway to huge stadium concerts, the world's leading throat expert, the Faroe Islands, Texas and Germany. We meet their enthusiastic manager, a male stripper and one of the biggest yodel fans in the world.

One Half of August

8-channel video installation. One half of August is an eight-screen, black-and-white, HD video installation in which Yang Fudong aims to create distortion and a change of reality in some of his selected video works by projecting them onto various structures and objects. Yang Fudong refers to this new technique as "multiple view film", which emphasizes the character's subtle expressions and simplest actions. What the viewer could perceive as separate instances, are actually simultaneously tied together into one scene, expanding and multiplying the spectator's usual vision and perception. As with most of Yang Fudong's works, here again the artist uses images metaphorically.

Anathema is a contemporary Fantasia on the notion of the network and its inherent instability, where the organic networks of human relations and the crystalline lattices of silicon-based technologies intertwine, and often tangle. From the artists’ statement: Anathema re-imagines the microscopic behavior of liquid crystals undergoing turbulence as a sentient entity that possesses the fingertips and the eyes enthralled by the LCD touch-screens of communicative capitalism. Anathema can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates and recombines the magical gestures of dream factory capitalism. By bringing the telecommunicating couplings of mother-father-daughter-son-machines and boyfriend-girlfriend-units into contact with the conductive imagery of liquid crystallization, Anathema proposes itself as a prototype for a counter-spell assembled from the possible worlds of capitalist sorcery.

Dancing for the Dead: Funeral Strippers in Taiwan

Funeral strippers work on Electric Flower Cars (EFC) which are trucks that have been converted to moving stages so that women can perform as the vehicles follow along with funerals or religious processions. EFC came to Taiwan's public attention in 1980 when newspapers began covering the phenomenon of stripping at funerals. There is a great deal of debate about whether this should be allowed to continue.

A Bohemian dog walker, an unemployed single mom, a Swedish fashion photographer, an aspiring dancer from Georgia, a gay South African model and two British grad students inadvertently discover that sometimes to find yourself, you have to acknowledge being lost.

The Video Diaries

Cairo-based Khaled Hafez's latest work, The Video Diaries, is the artist's response to the revolution that swept through Egypt in January and February 2011. This three-channel video has been adapted for Ibraaz into a single-channel work in which three windows display footage either shot by the artist or taken from social and international media. These moving images - showing policemen; protesters singing and praying; and people apparently being shot or attacked by water cannons - run simultaneously across the three screens, while clocks urgently count down the seconds of the work's duration. A persistent, echoing beat; the sounds of a baying crowd; and a lachrymose guitar solo accompany the footage at different points.

Matsuo Mine is a large abandoned complex in Hachimantai city, Iwate prefecture. I felt it possesses two conflicting natures- those of impermanence and eternity. Instead of the concrete “past” I tried to look for abstract “memories” through the viewfinder and resurrect them as a narrative.
