American Minor

Through carefully created, lingering scenes, the film focuses on the external environment and internal state of a fourteen-year-old, upper-middle-class blonde girl whose world is defined through products, objects, and perpetual consumption. The film observes a single, protracted morning in the life of a picture-perfect American youth lost in the dehumanizing space that wealth, isolation, and fear can provide. By watching this American teen perform basic acts, from eating cereal, to watching television, to combing her hair, the film aims to reveal the complicated relationship between personal pleasure and politics, youth and sexuality, and class and suppression. American Minor premiered in Nine Lives at the Hammer Museum in 2009, curated by Ali Subotnick, and then went on to be featured at the Sundance Film Festival and Director’s Fortnight in Cannes, both 2009.

Unforgettable Memory

To discuss the massacre of Chinese students who confronted power at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, in 1989, Liu Wei works from a realm that is at once intimate and transpersonal. The photograph of a man who stands alone facing a line of war tanks on the square, overrun by Chinese troops —one of the most iconic images of the 20th century— is the code for accessing memories blocked out by fear and censorship. The artist approaches passersby and questions them about the event. The question is repeatedly met with denial and evasion; the massacre is a taboo topic. There is no complicity, empathy, mourning, or grief; faced with the picture, everyone falls silent or runs away from the camera and their own memories.

A Belated "Thank you"

From the onset of the civil war, from 1946 and up until 1955, court-martials had sent thousands of young people from the ranks of EAM, ELAS, and KKE before a firing squad. Until a three-to-two judgment verdict was allowed, human networks, mainly of women, operated in a touching way, trying in the most unlikely ways to influence military judges, give courage to the condemned and take care of the prisoners' children.

JOURNAL AND REMARKS, the second reel of the ongoing Continuous Quantities series, contains 700 shots, 29 frames each, shuttling between the 1839 version of what later became Charles Darwin’s A Voyage of the Beagle (1845) and images I gathered on a recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. Space and time, word and image, animal and landscape are divided and drawn together in accordance with Leonardo da Vinci’s Notebook entry No. 917: “Describe the nature of Time as distinguished from the Geometrical definitions.”

"KINESTASIS" consists entirely of advertising still images. These are collaged and heavily image-processed to achieve a phantasmagoric effect. The multiplicities of advertising images are occasionally juxtaposed with quickly morphing "slit-scan" images of skulls in mass graves. Multiplicities as viewed from opposing sides of the capitalist coin.

End Rolls #2

The original work End Rolls is a performance for three 16mm projectors. A color negative film was exposed directly to different sources of light (candlelight, stove, fire) with the intention of creating fluctuations of color throughout the reel. Three copies were made, each printed at a different level of light. In the performance, sounds are extracted through the lens of each projector using light-sensor microphones. Since mechanical film projectors don’t run entirely in sync, the three films play together in a dance—echoes of movements and sounds—to which I make further changes in performance by working with the projector controls. End Rolls #2 is a digital adaptation, for two fixed screens, that was made for a program at Arnolfini, Bristol.

Holding in memories from their past, they go to a motel and talk about their relationship to forgive and understand about what it meant to be together. After spending the night at the motel, they soon realize they need to leave each other again to get back to reality.
