The Briton Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) is one of the most productive painters in art history: he created around 32,000 works, mostly landscape paintings. At the age of 14, the Royal Academy in London accepted him as a scholarship holder, and he later became a member there and taught at it. The “master of light”, as Turner was called early on, is considered the most famous forerunner of impressionism. Alain Jaubert's film presents the themes and experiences that determined Turner's work and life: natural spectacles, ships and extensive study trips to France, Italy and the Alps.

One Man Down

France, 1944: Shortly prior to D-Day, a young Private discovers an injured Sergeant who is unable to move. Despite recognizing the Sergeant as the power figure who had tortured him because of his homosexuality, and while under enemy fire, the Private decides to risk his life to try and save the Sergeant. This film is a tribute to all the soldiers who, while fighting WWII and despite their differences, decided to risk their lives to help another or other individuals.

A Portrait of Mr. Huang

Part of Qiu Jiongjiong’s 'chatterbox' oral history trilogy, this short documentary focuses on current storyteller and ex-cop Huang Songnian. Qiu playfully splices montage cuts between Huang’s wildly entertaining, sometimes very dark stories of intrepid forensic police work (including a super queasy tale of maggots and a body, and another of rural cannibalism), and disruptive yet oddly suitable Sichuan opera excerpts, pigeon portraits, and Qiu’s charming chalk drawings.

Sebastian Blank has used hacking-techniques to place “art-objects” into the inworld of a computergame, and observes its inhabitant’s reaction to it. Rather than worshipping the sublime, the computer-driven inhabitants react differently, never giving up the struggle to understand. Their shortage of artificial intelligence may be a metaphor for our own incapability to realize art as art in a public, thus normally non-art context.

SELF AND OTHERS - Eiga Dojo Workshop film

A very special event that took place immediately following the 2009 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in Furuyashiki Village. They held a ‘dojo,’ a school where the veteran independent filmmakers from Japan taught the younger generation of independent filmmakers from China and Japan. They watched films, shot and hand-developed Super-8 films. Participants: Azuma Mieko, Cong Feng, Huang Weikai, Ji Dan, Kawabe Ryota, Mao Chenyu, Sato Leo, and others... The participants formed teams. Each received a camera, several rolls of film, and a CD with (mostly urban) sounds to use as a soundtrack. They were to plan and shoot a short film using in-camera editing. (total 4 short films).

A man sees a woman and falls in Iove. To win her heart, he embarks upon a courtship involving fire-lit tribal dances, a perilous deer hunt and demonstrations of his virility. The only thing that unlocks her heart, however, is a flower, the “Camunian rose”, which he plucks from the rock and gives to her as a sign of his love.
