Kalendar obliquely tells the story of language acquisition. The filmmaker, struggling to learn a new language, comes to understand that the names of the months of the year have concrete manifestations.

George was an attempt to reconsider the basic components of my approach to filmmaking and boil them down to their bare essentials. The act of looking is implicit in my past documentary work but in this study it becomes the focus. The starting point for the film was the area that I was born and still reside in; the west end of Glasgow and its conjunction with the location where the film was first installed; a flat in Garnethill. The walk between these locations, and also central to the film is, through the St. George’s X area. The film deals with the relationship between sounds and images, acoustic phenomena and architectural details.

632 AD, the Chinese monk Xuanzang discovers the prodigious statues representing Buddha in the valley of Bamiyan Afghanistan. In 2008 the children living in the valley tell us the myths and legends about the tragic destiny of these statues that were destroyed by Talibans in 2001.

Character driven, emotionally charged and socially compelling; Walk Like A Man is a real life drama about real life issues punctuated with blood, sweat and queers!

Lady Trojans is a 60-minute documentary about a girls' high school basketball team in 1990's Tucson, AZ. The story focuses on Anna, star player and one of the group who identified as lesbians who made up the majority of the team for the four years that she played. Anna and her teammates took the risk to explore their sexuality, figuring out if they were gay, straight, or bi, by fooling around, dating, and falling in love with each other. Through current interviews with the Lady Trojans, archival VHS home movies from their high school escapades, reenactments, archival photographs, and original animation, Lady Trojans explores teen sexuality, manipulation, and love, coming out and coming of age.

In May of 1927, a young aviator made the first non-stop, solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris aboard his Spirit of St. Louis. Overnight, Charles A. Lindbergh became the world's best-known aviator and an American hero for generations to come.

“If I don’t walk, I don’t make any money”. This affirmation made by Leonel Badilla gives us a view of his daily routine in which he walks the Ñunoa neighborhood every day asking for money in order to pay for his daily bread and sleeping arrangements. He must be sure to earn this money by the end of every day or run the risk of staying out on the street.His walk appears difficult and tired given his advanced age, but he has his loyal companion that accompanies him daily, his hand held radio. Leonel listens to his favorite programs by Cristobal Cohen and Marcelo Hermosilla, that accompany him on this route while he ponders ideas regarding his life: his sadly abandoned childhood, his views about the governments of Allende and Pinochet, his being detained under the “suspicion of being a communist“, and his every-day struggle to survive which he considers would have been better had it ended after the military coup d’ etat.

A traditional animation, hand-drawn in 500+ frames (which are also on display as part of the installation). The animation consists solely of a shoe shine: hands move a length of cloth around and across a shoe, syncopated with a minimalistic melody and lyrics written by the artist. Its swaying, repetitive quality draws the audience into a simple and elegant comparison of artistic labor, in the form of drawing, to the marginalized service economy of a global city.

Chronogram is a photomontage that explores stillness, motion, and memory. Using a 35mm still camera, multiple exposures were composed and edited in-camera, creating frameless sequences of images printed on 35mm filmstrips. When projected, these images become a non-linear, non-synchronized collage. The ephemeral quality of the images—their transparency, layering, and repetition—invites us to reflect on the role memory plays in perception, the ways we mentally reconfigure fragments to construct stability and meaning in an environment of perpetual flux.

Reflections, shadows and an exploration of film movement and time, shot on/in a 100-yard stretch of the Mimente river in southern France.

A hard-hitting investigative documentary on honor killings of women. Shot in cinema-verite style with unprecedented access in remote rural villages in South-East Turkey, the film features compelling testimonies of women survivors in hiding, as well as candid interviews with male killers. The narrative thread juxtaposes the weight of tradition and community pressure against the courage of women who take a stand and struggle to overcome ancient practices.

Halleluia : one of the most beautiful prayers in the world, a magnificent and distributing piece from Leonard Cohen, wavering between the sacred and the profane, suggesting pain, pleasure, lust, and lost physical love ; a mournful eroticism chanted with sensuality and formidable grace by Jeff Buckley, an inspired performer/angel. Hence my deep desire to project my own ritual of images on its spellbinding lyrics. S.M

As the winning artist of the 2008 Film London Jarman Award, Luke Fowler was commissioned to produce four short films for 3 Minute Wonder, Channel 4s shorts strand. The four films premiered on Channel 4 over four consecutive nights in April 2009. Entitled, Anna, Helen, David and Lester, they are a series of portraits of four diverse individuals brought together through a shared residence – a flat in a Victorian tenement in the West End of Glasgow.
