“公众” (“Public”) is a short video of a series of gatherings in public space, recorded in various locations around the city of Beijing during the fall of 2008. When a public gathering may be regarded as a threat to the State, what possibilities for engagement do we have in the interstices between a gathering and a crowd or mob? As we observe people waiting for the bus, exercising, hanging out and becoming spectators to the little happenings of the everyday, the distances between bodies become shorter, and the boundaries of personal space begin to blur. A closer look at the density of "the masses", however, reveals the gestures, glances and words that emerge in the spaces between and around people, and it is here that new narratives begin to unfold.

A man with a camera runs from Sapporo and Ishikari in the north, to the Amami Islands such in the south, and as far as Jordan and Iraq in the west. Encounters with poets, anthropologists, Russian literature scholars, Ainu ethnic activists, nationalists, folk dancers, musicians, Amami singers, dark dancers, cameramen, shamisen players, and more are captured in dazzling images and sound. The title comes from Atsushi Nakajima's poem "In the darkness of Nubatama's universe, there is something bright about human culture."

From early works such as The Nervous System, 2002 – a monumental spinning machine that endlessly weaves a length of coloured rope into the form of a double helix, the shape of DNA – to his recent giant spiral work Continuum, 2004, the artist has attempted to visualize, among other things, the incomprehensible of human concerns, time.

In the settlements on the West Bank, labour laws for Palestinians are ambiguous and law enforcement is weak. This juridical chaos is causing abuse of Palestinian workers. Despite of this, more and more Palestinians turning for work to the Israeli settlements. Because the Palestinian economy is unable to create enough jobs.
