In this sobering account of the ongoing violence, Ahmed Hashim, a specialist on Middle Eastern strategic issues and on irregular warfare, reveals the insurgents behind the widespread revolt, their motives, and their tactics. The insurgency, he shows, is not a united movement directed by a leadership with a single ideological vision. Instead, it involves former regime loyalists, Iraqis resentful of foreign occupation, foreign and domestic Islamist extremists, and elements of organized crime. These groups have cooperated with one another in the past and coordinated their attacks; but the alliance between nationalist Iraqi insurgents on the one hand and religious extremists has frayed considerably.

The atmosphere in this building block area, built in the 1970s in East Germany, was sinister, but it gave me the solitude to refine my work in my private studio space. The dark undertones of that time have become engrained into my artistic practice, and coincidentally, a few years after I made the film, the right-wing terrorist group NSU met in the same district, thus opening one of the darkest chapters in recent German history." The film itself is aged, worn and faded, doubling the existential intensity of its subject, while his use of multiple copies generates a brutal Musique concrète through variation and repetition. When I reviewed the video material it reminded me of a theatre performance which I recalled as “A Lecture to an Academy”, given by Tutte Lemkow at the Arts Lab in Drury lane in 1968. The performance was a translation of Kafka’s "Ein Bericht für eine Akademie". The resulting video work is about the giving of voice - its internal and external experience - the predictive moment before a word and short term memory after it - immediate past and near future mixing with the present/presence.
