Sahrawi women, exiled to the refugee camps of Tindouf since 1975, have been the driving force behind a genuine revolution in all areas of Sahara society. They have carried out the miracle of reviving the spirit of a devastated community in the middle of a hostile, rocky desert.

Ritualised through performance to camera, Stages of Mourning is Pucill’s journey of bereavement. In as much as this is a meditation on coming to terms with loss, the film is an exploration of how our relationship with the dead is made different through film. The artist orders image fragments of her late lover and collaborator, Sandra Lahire. By trying to physically immerse herself into photographs and film footage or by restaging these, Pucill forms a continuous stream of a life of two lovers. Through this doubling and layering, illusions accumulate as if these were a product of a machine that didn’t stop.

The segment featuring Charlie solo is a great opportunity to see how he plays his custom-designed guitar. You have to marvel at what a self-deprecating musician this Bay-area native is, but never more so than on "Recess," where he refuses to show off or flaunt his technique in any way.

Omer, who is very popular among the bear set, cruises in parks and on the internet, unbeknownst to his wife and child. Demet is a MTF trans-activist who has been arrested and tortured by the police repeatedly because of her gender identity. Engin lives with his parents, who believe he's straight, but sneaks out for days at a time to be with his boyfriend. Serder strives to be an out gay activist, but does so with extreme caution.

Capturing the intimate conversation seems to be a way of keeping a personal memory alive while it merges with the viewer’s memory.
