This photogram film of sweets, sustenance and colored light was originally made for a Stan Brakhage memorial screening at the Robert Beck Memorial Cinema in New York. The title refers to an anecdote my father told me about his childhood- at five years of age, these were the words my father used to tell his own father that men had come and turned off their electricity. My father died of cancer shortly before Brakhage did- making this a film was a gesture for the both of them.

The sound will be produced from the visual on the optical soundtrack – for some parts, I used a 35mm still camera to expose the soundtrack area, and I scratched off the film emulsion directly for other parts. This is my senior thesis project at Binghamton University, and Julie Murray was my advisor.

After World War Two, successive governments sold off and encouraged the clearing of less viable areas for agriculture. During the 1960s a million acres a year were opened up. Much of the land was unsuitable for farming yet the new landholders were obliged to bulldoze and burn the native bush or risk losing their allocation. Most were eager to do so and pressured the government to release even more land. The long-term consequences have been devastating, with industrial farming and salinity turning most of this priceless natural heritage into a biological desert.

Al Capone was born to Italian immigrant parents on January 17, 1899 in New York City. He moved to Chicago in 1919, and there he became a notable criminal figure and gangster. He played large parts in gambling, alcohol, and prostitution rackets. In 1925, after an assassination attempt on former head Johnny Torrio, Capone took control of the Chicago Outfit, of which he had served as the second in command. He was listed on the FBI's "Most Wanted" list, sold alcohol during the Prohibition era, planned the St. Valentine's Day massacre, and was eventually indicted and convicted of income tax evasion in 1931.

This film is addressed to medical and mental health professionals, but is quite accessible to a lay audience as well. "Intersex" is the general term used to denote a variety of conditions in which a person is born with mixed sex anatomy. It is important to note that intersex conditions sometimes involve "ambiguous genitalia" but that intersexuality is not always evident from an external examination. Intersexuality may be caused by congenital adrenal hyperplasia, mixed gonadal dysgenesis, androgen insensitivity syndrome (complete or partial), 5-alpha reductase deficiency, and many others. The traditonal standard of care held that normal gender identity could be assigned through genital plastic surgery and by limiting information given to parents and patient. Many patients were subjected to multiple surgeries. This film outlines the problems with many current practices and provides guidelines for a new standard of care that is more advanced scientifically and ethically.

Unity in Diversity is based on the allegorical painting Galaxy of Musicians by the late 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. It shows eleven musicians, all women dressed in the different costumes of India signifying unity in diversity. This painting was shown at the World Congress of Religions in Chicago, in 1893, where the philosopher Swami Vivekananda addressed the danger of orthodoxy in religion. A nascent concept of nationalism was emerging at this time with strong reformist movements. The video contrasts this with later histories of the rise of fascism in India and the genocide in Gujarat in 2002 that shook the roots of this democratic country leaving mayhem and despair in its wake. What starts off as a visual fairy tale, where all parts of the nation play in harmony together, ends in a bloodbath.

An eight-minute work filmed on 35mm film, Collage d’Hollywood explores the materiality of the film medium in a literal way. Collage is assembled from movie trailers found at a deserted drive-in cinema, and explores onscreen sex and violence

This short animated film delights in celebrating the resiliency and resourcefulness of the female sex. Set in an 18th century pastoral countryside, Fair Phyllis the shepherdess struggles with her chaotic woolly world. Will she find balance or crack under the shear stress of it all?

“Our life is a movie! You shouldn’t be making another one,” an angry mother shouts, but her daughter is out the gate, determined to join a group of clandestine actors and filmmakers in a waiting van. In the dusty village of Khosro, twenty kilometers from Tehran, work can be found at the brick kiln, but amateur film production gives the locals something to live for. Or did, until the authorities discovered this community pastime, and writer-director Ali Matini was imprisoned. Now all but a few shun the project on pain of arrest. But Matini and company dared to make one more film so that the better-known director Moslem Mansouri (once a political prisoner himself) could document their art and courage. With a donkey for a dolly, the crew quips, “Even Orson Welles cannot work like this.” But then, Welles can’t honestly say, as Matini does, “Our life is what Kafka described. . . . We are hanging from the gallows of cinema.”

Birds of Paradise alludes to the parallelisms between women and birds that have come from art and literature.

A woman carefully drapes blue, white, and red cloths around her hips, as if she were about to begin a belly dance. This reference to the cliché of oriental femininity is tellingly clothed in the colors of the French nation. After a few minutes, just as the body finally begins its rhythmic movements, the Marseillaise blares out demonstratively. The heroic-national aspect of the march music supplants the expected sensuality of the dance. From the perspective of a young Algerian woman living in France, Zoulikha Bouabdellah presents the history of colonialism and a post-colonial present equally marked by exoticisms and racisms in an ironic and extremely condensed form. 1-channel video installation, color, sound

The film is composed from thirty-second long time-lapse sequences, filmed in Northwest Umbria. Condensing days into seconds, Hamlyn makes use of lap dissolves and time-lapse photography to compress the temporal duration of the Italian landscape. The film invokes some pre-cinematic technologies mainly in the shadow plays where light and shadow manifest as the movement of trees, clouds, and other objects cast by the sun project and dance onto white walls and other surfaces, emulating and interacting with the film’s grain

A half-hour immersion under the trees, road after road, with a succession of landscapes from the Périgord Noir... “uaoen” is a dreamlike film that leads the spectator through a landscape in transformation: in turn, its image is transformed, tree by tree, pixel by pixel — the landscape looses it’s iconography and its depth all while moving towards a final rupture with perspective by becoming completely flat. A work which frees itself from classical film dogma in order to become a space that is open and thus reserved for the liberty of the imagination.
