The film sees a businessman (the Soho Eckstein figure from Kentridge's earlier films) standing on a hotel balcony watching the waves. Time passes, as the sea rolls back andforth in endless repetitions. We as viewers observed from his point of view. Then the scene shifts to a large drawing of a man, still in his business suit but now alternately sleeping and reading a newspaper at the water's edge in a deck chair. The drawing is folded into a series of images that provide a visual mediation on time's passage, on industry, on ildeness. Kentridge's work is often densely allusive, and here the film alludes to the Old Testament. The artist expressedly indicates that biblical accounts has informed his thinking. It is what he refers to as being 'over-determined' in that the motif arises from several distinct sets of meaning.

Desde la memoria

Desde la memoria are recollections of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. Excerpts from interviews with contemporary witnesses, alienated archive material and pictures of today’s Spanish day-to-day-life have been merged into an experimental montage. Picture and sound fragments are associatively related, evoking – like a collective stream of memories – the misery in times of war and oppression.

An Anagram

The film I made from Gary Henoch and Harlow Robinson’s footage, An Anagram is not a documentary at all, but rather a poetic essay on the impact of the sudden collapse of a belief system on a culture. It has a 17 part quasi-musical structure inspired by Dmitri Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues that at times ignores the literal meaning of certain interviews for the fragrant affect of the language and body language; that is, certain interactions are left un-translated so that the viewer is given full and unfettered access to the musical spirit that animates the arguments and quarrels caught so delicately in the sound and images. - Daniel Barnett

"Bracing, cryptic, and unsettling, this piece shows an advance in both decisiveness and risk. The soundscape is terrifyingly beautiful. The images take us on strange country roads, into the thick of drug deals, and suspicious fires ravished and abandoned love and unidentifiable turbulence. Whiplash edits prevail over vérité moments that eventually become unmoored by dreamlike intrusions. Some cuts have the power of pulmonary arrest and others are non-abrasive but startling in their disjunctions of time and place." (Mark McElhatten)

The film redimensions erotism between apparition and vanishing, revelation and suspension as if looked at from the inside. No story, just a quake, a permanent tension, a continuous flux. Behind the metamorphosis of the body into an animal or even a chimere (?), something is at play between the rawness and the marvellous of carnal bodies. This video is part of the Slave collection : a series of portraits of men show as sexslaves. Tidemills

A placid 8.5 minute seaside film, filmed at Tidemills beach near Newhaven on the Sussex coast in summer 2003. It was shot on film (Kodak EXR 7248 as far as I remember) but only ever finished on DV. The sound is mono, recorded entirely where the footage was filmed, and entirely non-sync. There is one tiny audio dropout, where some oxide has dropped-off the now quite old master tape. The SuperSeaCat no longer runs between Newhaven end Dieppe, having been replaced by a much larger ferry, and parts of the land immediately behind the beach are now threatened with industrial development.

Liu Lan tells a story about the break with tradition in China. An intellectual in a white suit meets a traditionally dressed woman in the countryside. Despite their mutual love, their lives seem incompatible. A woman’s voice sings a folksong, Why are people in love always separated from one another?’ The film’s atmosphere is melancholy and the landscape veiled in mist. Here Yang Fudong shows his connections with Chinese landscape painting.

Hiker

A handheld camera trails a woman as she hikes up the Matterhorn. Suspense rises as she ascends, accompanied by a horror movie soundtrack. The shaky camera offers no reverse shots, implying the presence of an imminent threat. Drawing on the trope of the first-person "killer POV" as identified by film theory, the lack of camera attribution implicates the viewer as the potential stalker. Additionally inspired by Edmund Burke's writing on the terror-provoking quality of the sublime, the soundtrack intensifies in volume each time the camera pans out across the majestic, nearly unfathomable landscape. Though alpine climaxes come into view, the unrelenting sound never allows tension to be released.
