A Sense of Place

Sally Goode has been blind from birth. Tony Hill took her to a location unknown to her and recorded her describing what she found. By touch and sound she learns about the place and, with imagination, simplicity of expression and a joyful openness she articulates her findings. The sighted must see through her hands to experience this place. Objects, normally recognisable at a glance, become stranger and less identifiable when described by touch and without the vocabulary of vision.

Roger Williams: Freedom's Forgotten Hero

Here is his monumental story of establishing a governmental body to provide genuine "freedom of religion and soul liberty." Participating scholars include Edwin S. Davis, Director of Church State Studies at Baylor University; Keith Francis, Chair of the History Dept. at Pacific Union College; and J. Stanley Lemons, Professor of History at Rhode Island College.

Incarnation (Boy) Negative & Positive evokes the ghosts from Stan Brakhage’s Mothlight. Boy images incarnate from found-footage film corpse. Boys and incarnation (boys) gaze at each other. Wu’s hand-processed 16 mm double projection employs negative and positive prints of the same snippet from appropriated porn film to summon an eerie doppelganger of erotic obsession.

It is not immediately that the cinematic space is filled with fresh shots. The orders of the new government are initially carried out by the filmmakers remaining in Soviet Russia with pre-revolutionary experience. The agitfilm of the Civil War is replaced by a "revolutionary melodrama" by the mid-20s. The expansion of film production requires new personnel: young people come from the "left" theater, who in the very near future will have to create a new revolutionary cinema.

Women of the Sand: Nomad Islamic Women

A breath-taking documentary about nomad women in the Sahara desert. Filmed in Mauritania, it follows the day-to-day activities of women, documenting their work, family and community life, expectations and emotions. Women of the Sand was filmed in cinema-verité style, with no narration. The non-intrusive camera allows the women to tell their stories in a candid and intimate way. The stunning photography captures the immensity of the desert and the giant sand dunes which have already covered ninety per cent of the country and threatening the very existence of the nomadic lifestyle. Women of the Sand is a tale of women’s resilience and a poignant portrait of a vanishing way of life. The film is part of the permanent film collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York.

London Birds Can't Fly

London Birds... evokes the shifting mental states of a streetwise, 15 year old girl. The film explores the impact of her surprise sexual awakening: a moment of rejection that's bad enough to make her run and keep running.

L'appel de la toundra

A Chukchi family seeks a way between nomadism and modernity. This film was made during autumn 2000, in northeastern Yakutia, not far from the mouth of the Kolyma river, where a family group of reindeer herders tries to find an original way to live autonomously. The films shows the members of this community in the three places where they live and operate: in the tundra, where part of this group takes care of the prosperity of some 2,000 reindeers, thus perpetuating a nomadic way of life and preserving most of the traditional techniques of herding; on the bank of the river, where two members of the group devote themselves to fishing; and in a further southern location, where the family group has established a permanent base : this is where the two ancestors, Egor and Akoulina, intend to accommodate their relatives in order to pass down to the youngsters a cultural heritage that is more and more threatened.

The family in question was the Jacksons, single-parent Jacqui and her seven children, three girls and four boys. All four of the boys, aged between six and nineteen at the time of the making of the film, are on the autistic spectrum.

Two days after the opening of Timur's grave, on the night of June 22, fascist Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war. Many associated this with the discovery of the tomb of Tamerlane. Panic broke out in Samarkand. The expedition was urgently curtailed, the remains of Timur were sent for research to Moscow.

The American Bickman Burger

In a world where killing is legal and traffic violations are punishable by life in prison. A serial killer named Bickman Pike frantically chases after his life long dream to marry and have children. Along the way he creates the worlds largest fast food chain. Its success made possible by Bickman's victims being ground up into addictive hamburger patties. The world stands in awe to the Bickman phenomenon while reporter Walter Fufckin and his cameraman Barney Wright struggle to bring the world a proper representation of the facts. Bickman finally marries a Las Vegas dancer named Mimi Marigold, almost immediately their son Peter Pike is unleashed upon the world. Like his father before him, Peter attempts to make his own dream a reality. Not even the hand of God is able to put a stop to Peter Pike's agonizing master plan.
