finger petals

Egan’s first film and her first experiment in translating written text/language into an aural object. “finger petals” is a handmade cameraless film which uses collage techniques to sculpt the images and sound. The visual composition was made by meticulously cutting, shaping and collaging flowers onto the filmstrip. The sound treatment is created by pasting e.e. cummings’ poem “somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond,” the letters themselves forming the audio as their graphic shape is translated into sound.

"Bayini is a great spiritual woman she started to talk, to dance, to sing. She made everything around, all that comes from history. The vision and the dream she was seeing is the Anchor". Murrmurrnga Burarrwanga, his grandmother Gaymala Yunupingu, and their family established at Bawaka, Port Bradshaw, in North Australia, tell a story related to a precolonial (at least several centuries ago) experience of trade between their people, the Yolngu from Arnhem Land, and "fishermen from South-East Asia: the Macassans who used to collect trepang in exchange for rice, tobacco, pipes, knifes and canoes". Body language, paintings, songs and dances accompanied by the didjeridu give us an insight into their system of knowledge based on a very complex network of spiritual connections between people and the environment.

The film endeavors to tell of the relationship between a Korean-born foreigner in America and his father in Korea, separated both culturally and generationally by the communication gap between them. In Korea, A-DA-DA is an onomatopoetic name given to a person who stutters. A-DA-DA is conceived as a stuttering film, not a film about stuttering.
