Song of the Mushroom

Song of the Mushroom (2002), completed in December 2002, is a collaboration between filmmakers Joel Haertling and Stan Brakhage. With interest in mycology, Haertling made mushroom spore prints directly onto clear 16mm film. A 7.25-second loop was passed from Haertling to Brakhage who added hand painting. This loop was then step-processed utilizing a variety of lighting aspects. Brakhage did the final edit. This was one of the very last films Brakhage made before he left Boulder in January 2003. He died in Canada in March 2003.

She relates how, with family and staff members sent back to the U.S. for security reasons, she held talks with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to determine whether the one-time Taliban ally would support President Bush's war on terrorism. It was a turning point in the crisis, and one of several dramatic moments in this fascinating, highly personal look at American foreign policy.

"In her day-in-the-life portrait of an African-American woman, Simpson uses tropes of cinema, diary, and surveillance. The portrait appears on 31 12-by-9-inch flat video screens arrayed on a gallery wall to resemble a month on a calendar: a row of three screens tops four rows of seven screens. Each video runs about 20 minutes and appears to chronicle the events of a single day; most shots last around five seconds and the streams of imagery are not synchronized, so viewers face a kinetic panorama." -Bill Stamets

The Lost City Of Shang

In 1889, a Chinese man using decayed, ancient tortoise shells in his malaria medicine noticed that the shells were covered with scrolls of mysterious inscriptions. The oracle bones, as the shells were called, told the story of an ancient people known as the Shang - a civilisation which had long been dismissed as legend. Since then, historians have found more evidence of this ancient city, but the city itself has never been found.

In different locations(Beriln, Paris, Daegu, Oksan) and out of the filmed reel, 15 short films were edited and screened at 16 frame/sec and 9 sec. at 24 frame/sec). The film mostly about family, family related places, unfamiliar sceneries that were seen while taking a walk with a friend, scenes of my hometown, Daegu, airport and streets of Paris while transiting a flight to Korea life of Berlin.

Stiltwalkers

A solitary fisherman carves and sketches to pass the time. But this day his drawings seem to have a life of their own. Fish fly off the pages and leap into the sea. An island appears on the watery expanse, and the poles around his boat begin to move ominously. His own creation seems to give rise to a strange, surreal and ultimately fragile two-dimensional world, guarded by a tribe of stiltwalkers.

Three male native speakers endlessly correct a woman's foreign pronunciations of English, French and Polish. It seems that the absolute pronunciation of the national texts is represented at its best in the cacophony of three languages overlapping female and male recitations of the anthems. These nonsensical exercises of the mouths problematize the meaning of certain politically charged words.

In this captivating film by Gerald Caillat, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, at the age of 80, looks back on her musical life and tells the story of her glittering career. The documentary contains accompanying archival footage as she narrates her life story, in English, through the various roles and performances that have shaped the life of one of the greatest of all singers. Schwarzkopf was one of the finest sopranos of her time. She was an outstanding performer both on the concert platform and in the opera house, where she memorably characterized such roles as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) and the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro).

The camera work acts as a controller manipulator producing a hostage-like situation within an isolated environment. The origins of this tape was inspired by the short 1949 film by Kenneth Anger titled "Puce Moment" in which a 'heroine', for most of the piece, elaborately prepares herself to venture outside of her house." - David Askevold
