The image shows two faces of the story of hip-hop music, which submerged in the seventies in the New York outskirts of The Bronx. Two vinyl records are turning on a turntable. On the one hand the soundtrack is heard of three decades ago, on the other the voices of musicians today. The turntable is mounted at the foot of a block in the Bronx. It is the end of a Block Party, a ghetto party centring on hip-hop. In the same image those artists are brought together who stood at the cradle of this musical genre.

"Lewis Klahr's collage films have always mimed the processes of memory by pulling together the discards of contemporary life (images from ads, text books, or comic books, objects such as game pieces, menus, playing cards) into scenarios that seem like some Hollywood film dimly remembered. In Daylight Moon, he reaches even further back, to try to recall the moments in which a small child configures the world out of patterns of visual fascination, a mode of seeing that relies on touch and the feel of things rather than deep space. One of his most abstract films, Daylight Moon rarely reveals a human figure. A few takes of Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, a scene from Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity, are the starting point for Picture Again: a woman and a man in a car, the murderess and her prey. The images in this sequence are accompanied and superimposed by documentary street scenes from Berlin and Madrid. A few birds flutter like birds of prey through an old horror film. Picture Again values a thorough structuralist formation, musical rhythm of the images, without refraining from the ecstatic.

Issey Miyake Moves

Touring Issey Miyake's design studio and factory as well as spotlighting his garments on the runway, this program presents a total look at one of the world's leading fashion designers. Half innovation, half invention, Issey's use of pleats and twists has opened up a whole new world of possibilities in fabric by exploiting texture and wrinkles. The process of folding and twisting the fabrics by hand, then baking them, is captured on film. Miyake talks about his background, training, and some of his favorite projects, such as designing costumes for William Forsythe's Frankfurt Ballet and outfits for Lithuania's 1992 Olympic team.

Pakistani-born Arslan saw no compromise in Islam and discarded his religion, and Iftekar, a Muslim community leader, admits that Islam needs to be brought into the twenty-first century. Through the words of these men, the struggle of gay Muslims is revealed.

Winchester

Combines static 16mm historical photographs of the famous Winchester house, drawings, and laborious digital manipulation to convey a psychological portrait of the famous San Jose landmark. Accompanied by a moody soundtrack, the piece opens with a black-and-white shot of the architectural facade. Superimposed over the house, the silhouette of a gunfighter fills the frame, alluding to the Winchester legacy. As the film unfolds, both mansion and rifleman are eclipsed by veils of saturated color and kinetic abstractions. Painterly shapes resembling gunshot wounds morph into Rorschach–like inkblots and back again into rifle–bearing specters.

City Horror: Song Of The Dead

Wing Man discovers among the old papers an unfinished song, and begins to compose an ending. Meanwhile, Wei Lai keeps seeing a female ghost draped in red. As the song nears completion, Wing Man begins to transform into another being, and Wei Lai's actions are becoming even more bizarre. But what is the meaning behind these transformations and their connection to this still unfinished song?

To The Land of Bliss

To the Land of Bliss is an intimate portrayal of the Chinese Pure Land Buddhist way of dying and living. In 1998, the filmmaker/anthropologist Wen-jie Qin returned to her home region in Sichuan Province in southwest China to research the post-Mao revival of Buddhism. During her fieldwork on the sacred mountain Emei, an eminent monk named Jue Chang passed away. People in the community laughed and cried at the departure of their beloved teacher. They gathered to escort his body through a rite of fire and to observe his consciousness rise to a paradise known as the Land of Bliss of Amita Buddha. The filmmaker captured some of the wonders and mystery from her search with these Chinese Pure Land Buddhists for the door to Amita Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life.
