Hojas de Maíz

Hojas de Maíz was made at the request of Cincinnati composer and instrument-builder Anthony Luensman. The film was originally envisioned to be part of Tony's installation, Irato, in which each of his twenty-plus pieces, on exhibit in a civic art center, responded to viewers' pressing of a button. An exhibit of doorbells, imaginatively defined. One of Tony's stocks-in-trade is the use of discarded upright piano innards as electrified harps; my film contribution was to be projected amidst arrays of vibrating piano strings as art patrons took an elevator from the ground floor to a performing arts center. While this eventually proved infeasible due to ambient light conditions in the building, it did inspire the look and basic vocabulary of the film.

The pasture-raised, mutagenic brain-child of bio-artist Adam Zaretsky and his collaborators, the power Farm or pFarm synergizes the power dynamics (and massages the ethical boundaries) of the Fetish Organic Biotech. The pFarmers pursue various lines of experimental research: producing hormonally elevated dominas, isolating the human gene for submissiveness, and of course bringing their Unconvention Organic GMOs from lab bench to medical bedside. Laughably implausible attempts to mix Green Movement Grassroots Agriculture, High Tech GMO Pharming and unabashed Sado-Masochistic fetish retrainings, pFarm is an erotically charged cinematic experiment in post-human vivocentrism.

The Christmas Truce

World War I began in August 1914, and by December all thoughts of quick victory had faded. Fighting was most fierce in a thin strip of land called the Western Front. A system of trenches separated Allies from Germans, with the area in between known as No Man's Land. On Christmas Eve, an astonishing event began--up and down the Western Front, Allied and German soldiers met peacefully in No Man's Land. Actor Ioan Gruffud narrates a feature-length look at the fabled Christmas truce, filled with eyewitness accounts.
