“My purpose in filming NOTES ON JONAS was not to make a portrait per se. As a film editor, I was mainly curious to know about his editing technique. When I tried to get an interview, Jonas played his accordion, his tuba, his harmonica… He even organized a jam session in the basement of AFA. I wondered: ‘Is Jonas too shy to let himself be interviewed by a woman?’ Enlisting a cameraman to shoot the film instead of me did the trick. Jonas invited us to his loft on Broadway and to his editing room. How happy I was to be watching as he gave me a long master class.” –Jackie Raynal

Fred Redding, an assistant at Hollywood agency CMA comes before the board, seeking a promotion, and is refused. He tells us the story of his coworker, Randy Tulane, who didn't just do his time at the agency, but used the system for his own purposes and, ultimately, to help his friend, Fred.

Made by Bhutan's first filmmaker (Ugyen Wangdi), Price of Knowledge (1999) is also Bhutan's first documentary. Day by day, 11 year old Sherab Dorji walks three hours to school. In the early morning he meets the other children of his village at a chorten, a Buddhist shrine. From there, they walk to school together singing. The road leads across a mountain and through the woods. The parents are constantly afraid of their children meeting up with wild animals along the path. When Sherab walks the last part by himself in the evening, he prays aloud to fight his fear. They walk so much, his father says, that their socks tear within a week. Sherab’s family depends on subsistence farming. Sherab and his family’s life are presented in a touching realistic portrait of rural Bhutan in 1999.

This film was made by hand with materials 16mm blank film (100m), transparent silicon, and blue pigment (Prussian-Paris blue), without a camera. There are 14,000 continuous blue pictures in this film without cuts. The reality of this work is the continuity of emotion and feeling expressed by the colour blue - a highly spiritual colour, Harada shows its emotional significance. The deeper it is, he shows, the more it awakens a desire for the eternal. You can see it dotted poignantly about in this film, sometimes as part of a far-off backdrop, and often as the outline of a mysterious mountain settlement.

On the night of 3 August 1996 a school of striped dolphins ran ashore near the village of Tuo on Ngasinue/Fenualoa Island in the Reef Islands (Solomon Islands). Dolphins have a special kinship-related link to the Aiwoo-speaking people in Tuo. Moffat Bonunga tells the legend or so-called local kastom story that explains why. Moffat's explanations are linked with those of another local expert, Commins Veio, who tells his version of the story to Nathaniel Meningi inside the men's house (sapolau) in Tuo. The night the dolphins run ashore, Moffat immediately contacts the film crew - the villagers want the crew to film this peculiar phenomenon. Although the film focuses on the kastom story and the villagers' re-enactment of the hunt, it also documents the villagers' joy that the sea once again has proved an important source of food.

This retrospective presents rare footage of Winters -- from his first TV series ("The Jonathan Winters Show" in 1956) to appearances on dozens of talk and variety shows and in numerous feature films. Those interviewed include Robin Williams and singer Andy Williams, on whose show Winters was a frequent guest.
