The Unwanted

It is a film about one of the ethnic cleansing in the Balkan Peninsula, which took place in in Bulgaria. The consequences of it are lasting till now. In the mid 80-ies the Bulgarian communist authorities started to forcefully change the Turkish names of about one million ethnic Turks into Bulgarian ones, in an attempt to resolve the ethnic problems that had been piled up for years. The film tells the stories about three women and their divided families. Each of them experienced in her own way this tragedy.

Soliloquy

Two screens face each other in a dark room, only a bench off to the side interrupting the space between them. Settling into this interstitial expanse of Shirin Neshat’s Soliloquy (1999), viewers become mediators, with the series of scenes on each screen flowing not past, but through this audience – asking them, perhaps, to act as witnesses to the ensuing visual dialogue. The titles begin, in English and Persian; then, the sole character appears, clad in black robes and played by Neshat herself. She is looking out of two different windows: one in Albany, New York; the other in Mardin, Turkey, not far from the artist’s native Iran.

Mannheim Steamroller: The Christmas Angel - A Story on Ice

This tale of good versus evil takes place in a magical land where toys come to life and evil is transformed into good. What makes The Christmas Angel especially entertaining is the combination of graceful skating by such well-known talents as Dorothy Hamill and Elvis Stojko and the emotive music of Mannheim Steamroller. The story tells of an evil gargoyle named Gargon (Stojko) who steals the Christmas angel (Tonia Kwiatkowski) from atop a snowy village's Christmas tree, thereby preventing the arrival of Christmas. A young mother (Hamill), along with a host of toys-come-to-life, follows Gargon into the dark otherworld in an attempt to rescue the stolen angel.

Indecisively they try out other possibilities, gestures, stylings. The preparations for breakfast are a routine of well-coordinated motions. In just 18 minutes the film takes a lot of time to show the course of events in their duration and repetition.

This was the first Dissociative Disorder's Unit in the United States. All subsequent units specializing in Multiple Personality Disorder/ Dissociative Identity Disorders have been modeled after it. After having his license suspended in Illinois, Dr. Braun has resumed practice in Butte, Montana. Despite the malpractice payments paid by insurance on his behalf as well, Dr. Kluft remains in practice and continues to give training lectures on the treatment of MPD/DID to large audiences of mental health practitioners.

The Birds Of Paradise

This is a hand-painted work which involves a variety of colors applied within gouged and scratched shapes which approximate both swift shifts of bird-shape (legs, beaks and feather-spreads especially) and the Bird of Paradise flower-form as well, the former tending to metamorphize into the latter across the course of the work. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2017.
