Random Acts of Intimacy is a film about brief moments of contact and sexual intimacy. It addresses notions of erotic memory, sexual fantasy, sexual desire and romantic love. It explores the possibility that sex with strangers might be the closest we get to realising current notions of romantic love - intense, passionate, impulsive.

A character is inside a cubical room; there is a hole in the roof, which is too high to reach. But pushing on the walls distorts the room in various ways, always appearing to bring the hole closer while still leaving it tantalizingly inaccessible.

In January 1999, at the height of the Lewinsky-Clinton affair, Herman Asselberghs and Dieter Lesage asked me if I would be in for a trip to Lost Nation. They explained this was part of a project they were setting up in Brussels: a place slash library slash installation about vanished nations such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, East and West Germany, USSR, and Zaire. But where was Lost Nation? Browsing through their library, Herman and Dieter stumbled onto Lost Nation, an American village located on Highway 136 in Eastern Iowa, with a community of 497 citizens. And so, this little road movie was the result. A trip to a nation where the average citizen spends about 5 years of his lifetime waiting in line, 2 years trying to reach people by telephone, 1 year searching for misplaced objects, 8 months opening junk-mail and 6 months sitting at traffic lights. A nation that attempted to impeach the wrong president.

On September 15, 1977, a blind couple and their three-year-old son, Iván, disappeared from their home in a repressive operation led by the Army, the Police, and the Gendarmerie. The child was later handed over to the couple's relatives. The house was occupied for 17 years by the Guarnic Center for Retired Non-Commissioned Officers and Gendarmes. The documentary aims to rescue memory; it focuses on a single character, Negrita, the mother of the disappeared blind woman, and her struggle. The intention is to shed light on an event that was kept hidden by the official narrative, and to highlight, in Mostar, the irreparable damage it causes.
