A ship sets sail on an epic voyage through malignant natural and supernatural elements from which one man alone survives. An adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner illustrated by19th Century wood engravings which are animated by scratching directly into the surface of color filmstock. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner with its message of ecological redemption has a curiously contemporary resonance, but it is at the level of the mythic that the poem has lasting relevance; for this epic tale of extraordinary events simply mirrors the struggle that each human being faces on their own in his or her life. -VDB

The Postcard

The postcard obviously begins with a map. Posted in the Caribbean, it is addressed by a father to his son. We quickly understand that the mother and her child are preparing to leave for the funeral mass of the father in question. Confident in his father's life and good health, the boy refuses to believe that the coffin is occupied and, indifferent to the solemn atmosphere of the moment, he worries about a young woman standing apart from the procession.

The film is composed of receding planes in a landscape: a back garden and the houses beyond. The wooden lattice fence, visible in the image, marks the border between enclosed and open, private and public space, and forms both a fulcrum for the work and a formal grid by which the shots are framed and organised.
