A Portrait of Mr Pink

A Portrait of Mr Pink

1997 • 15 min • United Kingdom
Seventy-three-year-old Mr. Pink is a retired refuse collector who came to Britain from Jamaica in the fifties. He lives alone in a ramshackle, but extraordinary house in a South East London suburb. Inspired by a mixture of dreams, memories of his childhood and his religion, he adorned his Victorian mansion with his own unique designs. Inside and out, the house is decorated with the intense colors of the Caribbean, combined with other influences such as the stained glass windows in churches. His colorful garden contributes to the over all visual effect. Mr. Pink's urge for self-expression includes recording his own music and songs and making spectacular hats of leaves and flowers which he wears with cheerful aplomb. An observer of life and a deeply spiritual man, he shares his wisdom with us.

Mi Primer 35mm

In this film the author looks back on his own artistic career, resuming his film (‘EXPERIMENTAL SKETCHES. 4,200 frames not moving away from home’), a semiabstract work, filmed on Super-8 format, and literally put onto 35mm format. […] Collage as radical realism in order for home-made Super-8 to force its way into 35mm market world. It is the film that travels, that sees the world, and sketches will no longer be sketches to everyone’s eyes because we will move from the daily the handmade to the industrial, from the diary to biography, from biography to hagiography, from hagiography to, inevitably, poetry. — Ana Isabel Aréjula, Madrid, 2002
Black Atlantic: On the Orixas Route

Black Atlantic: On the Orixas Route

1997 • 53 min • Brazil
The waters of the Atlantic brought the slaves from Africa to Brazil, their bodies in chains but their souls inexorably tied to mother Africa. This Brazilian- made film takes us to both shores, to show how spiritual life, dance and song came with the captive people and took root in the new soil. Among the many traditions were the language and gods of Yoruba and Jejes from the Republic of Benin. When a group of freed slaves returned to Africa to rediscover their roots they were looked upon as outsiders. They became tradespeople - tailors, accountants and builders- and they actually brought Portuguese culture to Africa. Today, when Brazilians revisit Africa, they teach the Africans the culture that these descendants of slaves keep alive in Brazil. The documentary is a testimony to some of the ironies of the diaspora.

Through Luís de Camões and Prince Henry the Navigator, through its Viking ships and dizzying bridges, the Douro is a great witness to the history and culture of Portugal. Jean Rouch and Manoel de Oliveira are walking alongside while reciting a poem written by de Oliveira himself. During their walk, they reflect upon documentary-making, the charm of the river, and what it represents to them.

This film attempts to chart some of the reactions to Lefler's controversial and much maligned work.
The Biochemistry of Love at First Sight

The Biochemistry of Love at First Sight

1997 • 55 min • France
A scientific trip that is both rigorous and licentious! This disturbing exploration of our "states" shows by example what our emotions owe to the chemistry of the body ... Where have scientific studies of sexuality gotten to? We already knew that seduction is a game that defies all verbal representation. In this area, it is the body that expresses itself above all. However, it is difficult to admit that hormonal secretions play a role in the phenomenon of love at first sight! Psychiatrists, ethologists and biochemists analyze here the intricate relations of amorous feelings and chemical changes in the body. Two hundred and fifty substances come into play at different stages of the process! A clear teaching approach, illustrated, without false modesty, by a couple. From waiting to meet, from desire to weariness.
