"Three Interviews." This is from my archives, a TV shoot with Dima Frolov, 1994. Part one: my interview with Vlad for St. Petersburg TV. This interview is listed first because it's being published online for the first time. Part two: Vlad interviews Viktor Tuzov, and part three: Vlad interviews Timur Novikov (we filmed these two interviews for Tatyana Didenko's program "Silence 9"). I've already published the last two interviews online, but I decided to combine all three now—for friends, a chance to mentally transport myself back to those wonderful times when it seemed nothing could foreshadow disaster (at that point, Viktor was already terminally ill, but it was perceived as something extraordinary—an accident, an evil fate, the fate of one man).

Out for a Change

The award-winning short documentary features interviews with student athletes, coaches (including Stanford’s Tara Van Deveer), athletic directors, academics, and prominent professional athletes including Martina Navratilova and Zina Garrison-Jackson as they describe how the fear of being labeled a lesbian or “dyke” hinders the performance of all female athletes, and even prevents many women from participating in sports at all. The personal tales are contextualized within a larger narrative that illustrates how sexism and homophobia are wielded as political tools to retain male control over the multi-billion dollar women’s sports industry.

Granular Synthesis: Modell 5

MODELL 5 is a performance or installation in which the face of Japanese performer Akemi Takeya is subject to drastic time-based interventions that create in essence a cyborg-like hybrid, between human and machine. A roller coaster dramaturgy following the "life" of the four clones on screens. Using a technique derived from the principals of the sound design technique called "granular synthesis" but applied to the rather fat grains of single video frames (visual content and sound), Granular-Synthesis manages to evoke from a few expressions on the face of the performer Akemi Takeya, a frenzied exploration of the alter ego within touching distance.

A Certain Grace

Dragon Ridge

The film was filmed in 1994 and recorded the story of a place called Dragon Ridge in the mountains of Guangxi. The natural environment is poor, resources are scarce, and the hard-working and kind Hongyao people have lived here for more than 300 years. The mountains cut off contact with the outside world and cut off the 'pollution' of civilization. However, the impoverished children here do not give up their desire for knowledge. Despite difficult conditions and poor facilities, most children stay in school. In order to be able to provide children with books, parents cut down on food and clothing, and some children go to work-study programs at a young age. This film won grand prize at the 1995 Sichuan International Television Festival.
