The Big Sink

The Big Sink

1993 • 15 min • United Kingdom
"My first film, shot at art school on a crappy Super 8 camera I bought from the market. At the time I was obsessed with Universal Studios horror films, and Dreyer’s Vampyr, and I had just discovered three films by George Kuchar, and Alain Resnais. So it’s a mix of those, sort of. It was shot over many months, as I had to coerce my friends to give me their time, especially the lead, who required many hours of make-up before he killed my friends. It’s a play on Jekyll and Hyde, though how clear this is to the viewer I’m pretty uncertain.” - Ben Rivers

Biogenesis

Biogenesis

1993 • 7 min • United Kingdom
Biogenesis shows the evolution of artificial life forms in a synthetic universe where 'survival of the fittest' is replaced by 'survival of the most aesthetic'. We see cellular evolution and the replication of mutations forming chain-like structures resembling coral. The artist is like a gardener, breeding, selecting, marrying and steering the course of evolution for creative ends. The film is a record of this evolutionary process. It can be viewed as a psychedelic experience or a more subtle parody of a man's relationship with the natural world through modern technology.

Revolver

Revolver

REVOLVER incorporates diary observations, found and physically manipulated images as well as experiments of shooting through handmade pinhole lenses. Light motivates growth and decay. Abstractions push and pull in the passage of time toward an exceedingly anxious future.

Fear in the Forest

1993 • 47 min • United States of America
Jasmine has mixed feelings about her visit in the United States. Her friend Julie has taken her on her first camping trip, and so far it has been more than either of them had bargained for. Just two days ago, they had been captured, tied and tickled by a deranged woodsman (See The Happy Woodcutter). They managed to escape only to find their car wouldn't start. Now they have to make their way back to the village on foot. This means two more days of camping out. To make matters worse, there's another lunatic prowling the woods. When he spies the beautiful oriental Jasmine, he has a flashback to his tour duty in Vietnam. Unable to distinguish reality from delusion, sees Jasmine as a Viet Cong. He captures her, ties her up and subjects her to a cruel interrogation. Julie is soon captured and treated in a similar manner. What started out as a fun camping trip has turned out to be an ordeal of bondage and terror.
