The First Political Speech

The First Political Speech is inspired by words, charismatic hypnotic and humorous, but ultimately meaningless. The animation shows a crowd of technological “robotniks”, enhanced by a speaker seen only through the motion of its shadow. The robotniks, surrounded by hazy images of past, current and future world leaders only through the motion of its shadow. The robotniks, surrounded by hazy images of past, current and future world leaders from many cultures, respond with applause, as serfs to empty words. The words of inspiration used in the animation are from a poem of the same title written by Canadian author, Eli Mandel.

Flotte

Flotte is French slang for rain or downpour. This work was taken on a rainy day at the Abt Gallery in Waseda, Tokyo, a few days before his solo exhibition. If I can't shoot that day, I have to give up on the new work, and I can't help but worry about the rain. Before I saw the rush, I was worried about whether the picture would come out properly, but the rain came out beautifully, so I gave it the title "FLOTTE". It is constructed so that the speed changes intermittently in one cut (actually, it is meant to appear that way).

In all Schneemann's montages, films and performances, there is an insistent repetition of disparate motifs — within each work and from work to work. This video presents the consistent relocation of these themes to suggest a cumulative continuity; from montage to montage, each motif is readjusted, repositioned, dismembered and remembered in new contexts. This video includes documentation of four installations: Venus Vectors (1989-98), Cycladic Imprints (1989-92), Scroll Paintings with Exploded TV (1990-91) and Video Rocks(1989-92).

The 54th, the record of that summer, is, as the name suggests, the record of the 54-day long struggle for 'nullification of an ex officio sign' by Hyundai Precision Industry workers in Ulsan in the hot summer of 1993. Prior to collective bargaining on wages, the company secretly signed a unilateral agreement (signed ex officio) with one of the labor union leaders and tried to put it into practice. The workers of Ulsan Hyundai Precision Industry were enraged at the sense of betrayal of the union leader they trusted and the despicable treatment of the company, and for 54 days in the hot summer, they start a strike to get a fair price for their labor.
