Plastic Poem

Plastic Poem

2025 • 8 min • United States
Inspired by surrealist and structuralist filmmakers, plastic poem is assembled like a wordless concrete poem incorporating sound collage and chiaroscuro images of plastic sprues, the manufacturing byproduct of tabletop gaming figurines. Play is central to its conception, however, the film itself actively rejects narrative structure in favor of treating original images as “found” objects themselves, arranged and repeated as a series of poetic devices in stanzas. This abstraction allows for aesthetic investigation and political critique to occupy the same arena, and the two tend to confuse each other: structured play vs. the superstructure.
ghost towne™

ghost towne™

2026 • 7 min • United States
'ghost towne™' is an experimental short film that examines the current state of the American project through the lens of an unassembled hobby model kit depicting an idealistic nineteenth century American Main Street. Set to a monologue from Thornton Wilder’s 'Our Town' by the play’s omnipresent narrator (Hal Holbrook, 1976) in a “make-believe” cemetery, the film scrutinizes American paranoia, morality, and historical optimism during a contemporary moment that ruthlessly exhumes and redeploys the nation’s darkest pastimes. 'ghost towne™' is the filmic culmination of an ongoing multi-disciplinary art project by artist M. Carson Day, and was made partially with select footage from a 2025 installation and performance piece entitled, 'a pie left cold in Our Towne™,' which was inspired by the great American roadside attraction.

This is a meditation, a moment of rest and resilience before resistance, for all who feel oppressed.” —Dimitry Saïd Chamy

Unfocussed Image

Unfocussed Image

2025 • 3 min • Austria, Not Specified
The short film 'Unfocussed Image' takes a closer look at Hong Sang-soo’s 2023 film 'In Water', repeatedly revisiting two of its scenes: protagonist's genuine encounter with the woman on the beach as well as its reenactment – a moment of fictional reinterpretation. As the spectators of the film, we ourselves cannot see clearly. The focus plane of In Water is almost always located closer to the camera than the subjects, which ‘flattens’ an entire range of view to an ‘endless background’. This short essay-film develops an argument for the unfocussed image to become an instrument of reflexivity. Hong insists on the role of the audience, by emphasizing his own POV as equal to the viewer. The technique of the unfocus is a property of time and a category of memory. It achieves the state of uncertainty about our spectatorial impulses at the very moment of watching. The radical formal experiment in subjecting the whole mise en scene to the totality of the unfocussed image is not just a supplement to the visual style, but rather a device for reflecting upon cinema as such. The defocus shrinks the distance between the viewer and the filmic setting, as if positioning the audience into the scene, bypassing the cinematic dispositif altogether. Our perception is constantly destabilized through the unreachability of a complete picture. As if constantly inhabiting several temporalities, we encounter an image and try to remember it at the same time. The unfocussed image treats cinema as visual thought in the constant process of its formation. One can argue that Hong’s unfocussed images do not require any ‘seeing’ – for it is all about looking.
